which has been proposed for some time:  a pipeline from Donaldsonville to lower Lafourche, spreading 1/3 of the river's flow (and land-building sediments).  This method has already been proven to work, at least partially, at the Caernarvon Freshwater Diversion Site (pdf) in Breton Sound, east of the river.

There are ways to slow, stop and eventually reverse the coastal erosion of Louisiana.  They have not been implemented on sufficient scale to be effective.

    •  I hope you're right! (3+ / 0-)

The 2008 study you cite is, of course, contrary to the 2009 study that says there's not enough silt in the river to offset rising sea levels due to global warming. I suspect the practical answer is that any restoration of silt depositing will at least slow down land loss, and that we'd be smart to implement as much silt deposition as possible, as quickly as possible.

Incidentally, that Caernarvon study is authored by a graduate of Warren Wilson College, which has a great environmental studies focus. My 17-yr-old daughter has recently decided she wants to attend WWC. How the hell I'll pay for it, I have no idea.
