among Independents -- 55% say they'll vote for him in the general election.

More telling -- and not good for Meek -- 48% of Florida Democrats say they'll vote for Crist while only 36% say they'll support the Dem. candidate.

    And current polling

surveyed 625 registered Florida voters May 3 - 5, found that Crist, who recently announced his decision to run as an Independent, with 38% of the vote. Meanwhile, Republican Marco Rubio earns 32% of the vote, while Democrat Kendrick Meek takes 19% of the vote.

Republicans back Rubio by 70% to 18% for Crist.  Even if the remaining Republicans all vote for Meek (right), he'd still be third in the poll.

that Crist may lose support in the next few months as he and the Republican party and the teabaggers go at each other's throats.
That sounds plausible to me, but if Dems keep supporting him instead of Meeks, and the indies like him, I'm not so sure that will happen.

attacking the Republican Party.  He's just given up on them and doing his thing.  So now the Republican Party's juvenile, retaliatory behavior has more people cheering Charlie on. (and more determined to beat the thuggish GOP)
