  •  Red-winged Backbirds (8+ / 0-)

They are among the most common birds we see in California. I love to hear their song. They've gotten so used to human populations that they're almost like pigeons in some areas. I go to Costco every couple of weeks and routinely see red-winged blackbirds hanging around by the doors, waiting for Costco to open. They sit on the shopping carts waiting like the rest of us. And the minute that big warehouse door opens, they swoop inside and fly straight up to the rafters and flit around while you're shopping. Costco has tried everything to discourage it -- fake owls, an automated shrieking device, you name it -- all to no avail. Here's a shot of one I took just last week near a wastewater pond.

    •  Yes, the redwings are great (7+ / 0-)

aren't they?  I love to see them perched atop reeds, singing their hearts out.  They're very common in NYC (Central Park) and out on Long Island.

Once a friend from Philly was in town & so excited to see one: they're less common in PA.
