  •  this is why Obama shouldn't have picked her. (0+ / 0-)
Republicans are going to do this to any nominee. Obama might as well have picked a real, known, proven progressive. Unless of course, he just doesn't believe in that cause, and as time goes on, it seems like sadly this is the case.

And she's yet another middle of the road centrist. We really have no way of knowing and that's the problem. This White House is going into midterm elections with an excitement problem and its hard to get excited about someone you know nothing about.

Even most wingnuts nowadays are embarrassed of Bush's record as President but point to his 2 SCOTUS picks as examples of what he got exactly right. It was well known that Alito and Roberts were far right reactionaries during nomination but Bush picked them because that's what the right wants on the Court. The picks earned him raves and they are doing exactly what they were supposed to do. Why is it so out of line for Dems to do the same?

        •  I'm not saying it is out of line for Dems (0+ / 0-)

          to do that.

What I am stating is that you seemed to be sure that she isn't a "real progressive", when you don't actually know that.

    •  Why would Obama pick someone who represents (0+ / 0-)

      a viewpoint different than his?

Why do people here keep insisting Barack is some sort of progressive or liberal?

He's right/centrist. 40 years ago, Obama would have been a Republican, not a Democrat.

Barack supports Wall Street, large energy companies, 'clean coal'/nuclear power and 'drill baby drill'. All sorts of leadership opportunities to change the way we use energy have been eschewed to support large multinational corporate energy companies. The military industrial complex is stronger than ever, armed conflict/war is seen as a first solution to foreign entanglements. This administration refuses to prosecute Bush Cheney for their crimes against the constitution and humanity, for their numerous violations of international treaties signed.

Kagan seems to be a reasonable pick. Her stay as Solicitor General is 100% in agreement with Obama's stances, as far as I can tell.

"Real known progressives" don't serve in leadership roles in this country, ever.

      They never will, either.

How to fight the fascist right? Register people to vote.

Wow that's something we can get behind.

        a pragmatist. A realist.

I'm sure he'd LIKE to do a lot of things, but that doesn't mean he CAN.

I'd LIKE to redo my entire house, put on an addition, and get all new furniture. But I'm a realist, and those things aren't happening anytime soon.

I'd also like to take a few months and travel, visit family, go to the moon, buy that jet pack, join the circus - but those things aren't happening either.

I recognize that, and I'm taking whatever I can manage to get.

It takes some maturity to realize that you're not going to get what you wanted, and work with what you have to maximize what you CAN get.

        •  you can be a pragmatist (0+ / 0-)

and progressive at the same time.

Apparently when the phrase "real progressive" is used, it means an ideologically pure progressive, which is completely unrealistic.
