rather in the position Obama's in now:

many liberals bitched about FDR all the time when he was in office. He was a 'tool' for wall street, a warmonger etc

He wasn't far enough left for some, and he was too far over for others. I had a grandfather who went to his grave cursing Roosevelt as a traitor to his class.

I think when we get some perspective on Obama, we may see that his strategy is less accommodationist than we now think. He came into office following eight years in which a cabal had tight control over all the levers of power and undoubtedly left behind a good many moles.

Were he to say flat out some of the left-leaning things we'd like to hear, the obstructionists would go after him even more than they have already.

OK, so maybe he does turn out to be an incompetent sell-out. But I'd prefer to give him some benefit of the doubt for a while longer. The ship of state is a hella big vessel, with a lot of inertia once underway, and it takes a very long time to slow something like that down enough to turn it without capsizing.
