But I think gross generalizations don't help solve anything.  Telling people they are idiots rarely helps win them over to your side.

I acknowledge periodically that there are many sincere Republicans who want what's best for the country; but I argue that the Republican Party as an institution, the leadership of the party, are corrupt and dishonest, etc.

With relatives in Indiana, Kansas, and Virginia, I know there are a number of normal, decent poeple still (unfortunately) in the Republican party. Partly that's because the US media is so weak and coopted.

I also know that the way to change someone is to get them to distance themselves from destructive ideas and institutions -- not to get them defending those ideas and institutions because they feel personally attacked.

are being marginalized by the Glenn Becks and other members of the Loonies Of The Right. There are plenty of people who are concerned about government spending (and indeed were concerned during the Bush administration as well), yet who don't subscribe to the politics of the lunatic right fringe -- I've got several of those in my own family. But they're being drowned out by the loudmouths...the question is whether they'll rise up to take their party back or simply just sit on their hands and stay home for the midterms.

        •  Sometimes I think that's the question. Sometimes, (0+ / 0-)

with people who feel abandoned, betrayed, angry, and lost, the question is whether the Democratic party can speak to them with enough clarity and respect that they will leave "their" party behind and come into the big tent.
