    I doubt that the President felt badly served by his Chief of Staff.

    This is what I think: the President values people around him who say what they think, and why they think it.

    Rahm is not as supremely confident as the President is.  I recall my jaw dropping at the degree of his audacity as shown in the book The Bridge when his major Chicago political/personal supporters got together with him to tell him not to run and why he should not.

    He ended up convincing them he was ready.

    His self-belief is almost beyond anything we know about.  This was not true when he was at the early run for state office in Illinois.  He was not then good enough.  But he is a fast learner.

    Rahm had scars probably from the Clinton era's battles, and knew that no one had achieved health care reform in 100 years.

    Obama is Obama.  Rahm Emanuel is Rahm Emanuel.  They do well together--at least so far.
