    That 19th Century technology outperforms PV. By a lot.

      because people have been working on mirrors and steam engines since the 19th century.  They've been working on PV on a large scale only since the '70s.

        Solar thermal isn't mirrors and steam engines. It's just a tube backing a plate. That's why it's cool: it's cheap and it works.

        It will probably outperform PV forever, especially as total energy budget. Which is why it's cool: it's cheap and it works.

        What's exciting about energy tech is when it works.

        PV is cool, too. But it's really not a competition: heat and electric are mostly separate energy consumers. In the real world, anyway.
