    It did not take a violent, extra-constitutional event for Protestants to give up their stranglehold.  All it took was to point out the inconsistency between the purported standards of the powers-that-be and reality.

    I have no fundamental problem with Catholic principles, and I find the Catholic grounding in Thomism with its strong emphasis on facts and logic to be far more reassuring than some of my fellow-Protestants' scripture-thumping obscurantism.

    But it is not sufficient for justice to be served, it must be seen to be served.  Like it or not, the Supreme Court is an eminently political institution, even if its members are (or were in fact) apolitical.

    A polity which is genuinely beyond these issues is a truly mature one.  We in Switzerland - with 700 years of democracy - aren't there.  We prefer to forestal the issues by arranging for visible diversity and representation.
