  •  Well, that's not quite right (6+ / 0-)

The church in Acts was evangelical, but not particularly hierarchical - there's no mention of Bishops, and Peter seems to be more a "first among equals" than a Pope figure.

And, as I noted, the early church tried to avoid getting any attention from the Romans, because said attention tended to involve unarmed Christians and lions.

So Engle is either poorly educated and wrong, or dishonest. I'm betting on the latter.

    •  That's how they describe it... (2+ / 0-)

...you well be correct (I haven't done enough work in this area to weigh in).

But I can say this - few who do have informed opinions on this are challenging them in visible ways. A number of traditional fundamentalists have been doing that, but otherwise there's little criticism.

      •  Conservative christians tend to hang together (2+ / 0-)

It used to be that Episcopalians and Presbyterians fought wars (in England). Not to mention that whole Protestant - Catholic thing.

Now they feel attacked by the educated elite. So they tend to not criticize each other.

It's the same reason that honest pastors don't call out crooked televangelists.

You can see similar effects in political parties.
