    something as simple as fact-checking.

    So, are to assume that nothing in the press is fact-checked, now? Its only done by these third-party services?

      The press will fact-check certain kinds of statements in a knee-jerk fashion, but they are not "in the habit" of fact-checking statements and claims made by politicians.

      They may, if they feel like it, go to an expert for a quote on the subject under discussion--and publishing that may reveal to the reader that the politician's claim is ignorant or even deceptive.

      Professionals writing editorial columns often point out that politicians are lying, providing facts to prove their point. Unfortunately, the columnists tend to represent a political ideology, so they are open to charges of bias against the politician unders discussion.

      We would have a better press if news reporters were required by their employers to fact check controversial claims by politicians--even if only in cases of politicians that have regularly been caught lying.
