Can we maybe say that if you have remained 100% in the US for 5 years with no criminal record and you've been employed for the majority of that time

Was designed to grant amnesty to about 750,000 people. It ended up granting amnesty to about 3.2 million people, and according to the then INS was rife with fraud and abuse.

Today, even the most conservative estimates say that there are about 11.8 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. Once any amnesty program is announced how many illegal immigrants do you estimate will be granted U.S. citizenship.

Keep in mind that S2611 would have allowed twenty four hours to do a complete background check on that prospective U.S. citizen.

Which is a small percentage of the US population. The important thing is to keep new ones from coming in and make it clear that any new people in will not be grandfathered in EVER. And that businesses who hire new undocumented immigrants will be punished so severely they may as well dissolve.

My beef with the 1986 amnesty is that it did not cover immigrants who were in the nation LEGALLY. It only applied to people illegally in the nation. This really screwed over people with student visas at the time.
