When the village is on fire, a sieve will not substitute for a fleet of fire engines. Sometimes incremental change won't EVER scale to address the problem.

    •  And like a "progressive"--at least the type that (0+ / 0-)

people here want--is electorally viable in a very conservative state like UT?

      •  Matheson is a Republican. (1+ / 0-)

If we're going to have a Republican, make it real one. No more disguises.

        •  That's really stupid--and the type of martyrdom (0+ / 0-)

liberalism that just sounds ridiculous. SLC is not SF. And an SF-style Democrat is unelectable there.

... about living as a Democrat in Utah.

Many of us who live here feel that Progressive values cannot advance in the state and the district because Congressman Matheson won't even raise the issues that those values demand be addressed.

On a very fundamental level, Matheson fails in his duty to represent what is often referred to as the "Democratic Party Wing" of the Utah party, those of us who hold what would largely be recognized as values and views held by mainstream Democrats throughout the country.

I've spent a good portion of my life working for Democrats running for office because I believe a government run on those views and values will result in a better, kinder and more just society than one run on the Republican Party ideals. The majority here in Utah is conservative - not stupid. My Party's nominee must advocate a core of those values and views, and challenge the majority to think, to educate them as to why the policies of our Party will serve them better than those of the Republicans. Claudia Wright will do that; my current Congressman does not.

If a politician continues to move away from the core of what his party's activists and membership hold dear, his reelection loses any value to them. For many here, Matheson crossed that line some time ago.
