Considering the topic, it is not in the least long winded - in fact I consider it very concise.

I would be interested in your taking your well founded observations to their conclusion. What will be America's 'nemesis' for it's behavior?

and, consequently, the end of cheap food.

That's my guess. There's only one thing that Americans will stand and fight for.

      Food.

Every time you purchase food you are casting a vote. Eat wisely.

is the end of america as people know it. america was built on cheap labor and energy. now that the energy is gone, america will fundamentally have to change. cheap energy made cheap land possible, the suburbs, the end of the railway system, etc. america will need major major changes in the next 50 years to survive in any form, and will not exist in its current form 50 years from now.

Welcome to the empire. now run away if you can... life is not a dress rehearsal

our ultimate fate, the final score?
I dunno.  My guess is we'll suffer worse events than the Gulf (which just may start a cascade of events itself), before we begin to look seriously at why we hold onto such destructive delusions about ourselves.
Modern American culture is nothing like American culture of pre WWII in fundamental ways. We are actively pretending the world is as limitless as it felt in 1900. So my further guess is climate catastrophe will be our final undoing, so to speak. We'll keep taxes too low to build coastal defenses against sea level rise, or an endless series of Storms of The Century wipes out another city or two.
But who knows? Maybe an aging, suped-up nuke plant with a history of safety problems...
Starving the public infrastructure to maximize private gain is age-old behavior, the classic tragedy of the commons. Big money will look out for itself in the end, as it does. The environment has no real advocacy, so I believe it will provide the tipping point.
I have no real idea when this might all come down, if it does.

The Republican Party will never die until there is a new political home for racists.

I believe we are witnessing the beginning of the end of American corporate and military imperialism. American dominated multinationals cannot continue to rape and pillage the world in the manner of which they have been accustomed much longer without something breaking.

That something will be the American dollar - America's pride and joy.

Unfortunately, too many Americans will cling to their guns and religion, rather than change their ways, so I envision tremendous strife and turmoil within the US in the coming decade.
