    since Eyjafjallajokull erupted because there are numerous precedents of Katla erupting a short time after it. Katla is much bigger, and when it blows, meltwater on a scale of Amazon + Yangtze + Nile comes screaming across the scenery at a hell of a rate. I've been to that part of Iceland and it looks as if it were bulldozed for as far as the eye can see. Occasionally there's a cairn of rocks where some family was drowned the last time it erupted in 1918. From Wikipedia's article on Katla:

    The last eruption in 1918 resulted in extending the southern coast by 5 km due to laharic flood deposits.

    That's a lot of landscape.
    The president of Iceland is acting in a prudent manner because if an eruption occurs, people will have no time to get out of there, but I still can't find anything but blog references warning of an immanent eruption.
