Would do well to understand that shutting down offshore drilling anywhere in the US just drives our importation of oil up rather than stopping our usage of it.  And so you're taking essentially the same position as him, just with your heads buried more deeply in the sand.

Far as this planet goes, there's not much difference between spilling in the gulf and spilling in say, Nigeria.

NIMBYisms is NIMBYism, whether you want it out of your state's backyard, or your country's backyard.

100% and, for the same reason I think any energy extraction should be as close to the point of use as possible in an ideal world. That way conservation would have an obvious basis in perceived reality. I get hopping mad at the folks out here in the English countryside who try to defeat wind farm initiatives. Sure, this place is very scenic, but if they want to run their lights and heat their homes, the energy has to come from somewhere. They might turn the heat down if it meant putting up another windmill.
Why make the powerless suffer for our profligacy?

At least for me, is that we need to get off of all 'extractive' energy production, and onto renewable energy sources.

In the short term however, we need to keep extracting that energy so that we have the capability and demand for renewable energy.  And we need to do so without simply shifting the burden to people elsewhere.
