    feeling superior.  It took me an embarrassing number of years for it to occur that a meritocracy, while clearly the most sensible of systems, would not be favored by those who lacked merit.  Those people do much better under other systems, patronage or inherited privilege, for example. Those are systems they can game, or get lucky under. If they had to live within their means, what they could earn with their merit, they'd end up poor white trash for sure, and who wants that? That access to resources they can't justify is a large aspect of the vested interests hanging on to every scrap of privilege they can lay hands on.
