    semantics and came to popular attention when his inserted himself as a force in disrupting aspects of the student strike at San Francisco State University during the late 60's.  He became popular as a defender of the status quo during the student activism and anti-Vietnam War period and riding this swell of popular sentiment against the leftist activists in California, was elected to the US Senate and served one term.  His right wing activism raised questions about his previous scholarship and his reputation as a scholar was overshadowed by his right wing activism.  He became the darling of the right wing and was called by Time Magazine as the second most popular person in California, behind Ronald Reagan.
