the 24th of April. Other leaks were detected on April 29th.

It took days to clear away the debris from the sunken oil rig so they could even begin to see what was going on. For that needed ROVs. Lots of ROVs. Which also needed to be transported to the site and world wide there just aren't that many.

There are two crucial factors which cannot be forgotten -

The crucial shortage of drilling equipment world wide and the time it takes to transport such equipment to a site.

Now whose fault or responsibility that is I don't know.  But that is the reality of what they're dealing with in the Gulf.

There should enough equipment to drill two relief wells.

At the point the BOP's would not shut as intended I would assume getting relief well drillings rig would be top of the list.

I don't know who to blame but I think that between two of the most powerful and wealthy companies and countries it's not too much to ask.

        •  First relief well started drilling on May 2. (2+ / 0-)

Five days after the second leaks were found.

After pushing by President Obama, second relief well started drilling on May 16.

There's a good deal of blame to go around.

I just want to make sure it's going in the right direction for the right reasons.

shortage of drilling equipment--certainly not enough to prevent sufficient equipment for a megasuperdisaster like this.

That sounds like a BP line.

This issue was debated at length today at the Oil Drum, and the consensus of people in the industry (as I saw it) is that this is incorrect.
