Rear Admiral Mary Landry today directed BP to launch a new procedure whereby the riser pipe will be cut and a containment structure fitted over the leak.

When the flow rate triples from cutting the riser and they fail to seat the LMRP cap everything will be Obama's fault.

the 2nd relief well - which they admit is the only thing that really might work - to cannibalize it for parts for a risky procedure. Good thinking.

cannibalizing for parts?  And their running out of mud as the explanation for why they stopped Top Kill and went to Junk Shot. Are they already writing this off as a total loss and trying to shrink their expenditures on a total loss before the thing has been fixed. Already?

By the bye, does anyone know what the financial pressure was to cut all of the corners which were cut here for financial reasons. Was there a financial reason the well had to be done by a certain date or at a certain cost or something like that, that made them willing to make all of us take the risk of this horror? Saying they were cheap doesn't feel right as a total explanation. Too many people were telling them they were at risk, and the oil they have already spilled is worth more as oil in the marketplace it will now never get to unless skimming is the best part of what they do, than the aggregate expense of all that went before.

        •  The "part" they are canibalizing is the BOP (0+ / 0-)

It's not like they have any more million dollar 5 story tall blow out preventers lying around.

They had to pull two from wells they were planing or starting just to use them for the relief wells.

          •  With all due respect, that doesn't make a lot of (0+ / 0-)

sense that they have none in reserve when a BOP is such a critical part of any well after the old spills. Nothing about the technology seems to have changed since the Mexican blow out thirty years ago, which means that the BOPs are essential everywhere, and for every essential device, there in ordinary prudence is a stockpile of parts if one of the parts on said essential item goes iffy. Of course, this one going iffy did not stop them from going forward.
