The Obama administration's regulatory mismanagement indicates that it is more interested in currying the gratitude of big oil lobbyists than it is in protecting the environment or the health and livelihoods of regular Americans.

And their response to the disastrous result of aligning with reckless greed over the needs of the majority? An orchestrated minimization of public awareness that might not only damage the President's political prospects, but make it more difficult to continue crafting policy and enforcing regulation to the expectations of big oil lobbyists.

Obama's presence on the coast was delayed for over a month. If he had been down there immediately and repeatedly, far more news would have been generated and far more Americans would realize the magnitude of this disaster. When he did visit, he avoided the worst of the damage, and the news cameras focused right along with him.

The EPA permitted use of this toxic dispersant for a month, helping BP to hide a significant % of the gusher beneath the surface and from the media.

And the government is preventing the press from reporting on the devastation that is visible:

BP contractors are operating alongside the FAA and Coast Guard at command centers that approve or deny flight requests. Charter pilots say they have been denied permission to fly below 3,000 feet when they have reporters or photographers aboard.

Those special flight restrictions, imposed on May 12, cover thousands of square miles of the Gulf and a broad swath of Louisiana's coast. Normally there are no restrictions on flying.

The chief of the Coast Guard's public affairs programs branch said access had been hampered by a cumbersome approval process that stretched all the way to the White House.

It gave BP more time to organize a Potemkin Village cleanup for press photo-ops.

Remember - we may not be able to save the Gulf Coast, but as long as BP comes out of this, that's acceptable. No point in looking backwards after all.

This was his second trip. He was also down there May 2.
