Precisely what part of the pipe are we usually seeing, gushing oil and gas? It always looks like it's not upright, but lying on the ocean floor.

Stupid Q, part II: how far is what we usually see from the BOP, anyway? Is it really close enough to be contained in one of BP's fantasy boxes together with the BOP?

It's raining, it's pouring, The BP guys were snoring, Gas bumped their well and it went to hell, And then blew off its mooring...

The pipe laying on the ground is the end of the main tube (riser) that went to the sunken rig. The line busted when the rig sank and that has been the main leak.

The view with several squirting leaks we saw during the Top Kill procedure was from the bend in the pipe you see in my top image.

The Riser End is hundreds of feet away from the Blow Out Preventer (5 story tall square yellow contraption in my top view). They are cutting the tube off at the top of the BOP so it won't be an issue anymore.
