  •  I can't help wondering what will happen when a (0+ / 0-)

'terrorist' manages to get past security in Washington DC with a Hiroshima sized thermonuclear bomb and blows the whole lot of them to smithereens leaving the city a smoking ruin? who is in charge of the national response then?

    Couldn't happen? no?

In the past decade surely we have proved that we live in the age of the unspeakable and unthinkable. Not only is the world accelerating it is escalating in both natural and man made disasters.

It looks like as a people we are un-equipped to deal with that concept. Someone will fix it, someone will explain ti, someone will make it go away and make it right. NOT.

      •  and every time a president (0+ / 0-)

extends the continuance of government planning, people from the other party claim it's about wanting to stay in office, beyond the elected term. the gop did it, when clinton signed, and even some kossacks did it, when bush signed. but as you say, it's been thought about- a lot. and prepared for, in great detail.

        •  I know that there was a lot of thought given to (0+ / 0-)

continuity after 9/11 which is why a 'designated' person is never at the SOU get-together for example.

Let's assume for the sake of hilarity that it was Max Baucus that particular year, but how on earth would it work if the White House, the Penatgon, the Capitol, House and Senate buildings, all those files, all those computers etc all went poof!

It is easy to plan but in reality if a major major disaster struck in a major city such as Washington, New York even Los Angeles or Chicago leaving few records I can't even begin to imagine the chaos and the pointing fingers.

Planning is one thing, executing is another.  It certainly makes those end of the world scenario movies like
The Morning After' a great deal more credible. The reaction of the public to this current disaster makes it really easy for me to see how quickly the human race would turn on each other and rend each other apart if all restraints have been removed.  Enforcement takes power and it would quickly revert to territorial and tribal supremacy. We the People only consent to be governed, we don't automatically welcome it or willingly obey it.

Americans don't take to the streets that easily but we see every day that it happens, Athens and Bangkok are only the most recent example of how quickly a nation can descend into chaos if the head is removed.

          •  everything (0+ / 0-)

has a backup. there is an entire city underneath washington.

what of that is where they stage the explosion? in the Metro?  maybe we shouldn't give anyone any ideas. LOL. AS IF!!!!!

During my working years I once made a film for a government think tank called the Battelle Institute on how 'the bomb' was made and used. I had unprecedented access to the Signal Corps footage at that time taken immediately after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The shadows of vaporized humans beings burned into the concrete of the pavement still haunts me.

Actually the human appetite for disaster was finally made me give up malign compilation documentaries, I spent my life looking at the Killing Fields, the battlefields, the aftermath of disaster and what it does to the human body and soul.

I have no great faith in any good outcome if a real disaster such as nuclear war or attack happens on American soil.

But enough of that for today, there is enough real disaster floating around without imagining worse ones. I'm off to mow my tall grass.  Who knows this used to be a volcanic area, it might start up in my backyard again.

    •  Why do we have to 'imagine' (0+ / 0-)

this blowout by BP, when 30 years ago we saw exactly the same thing with Ixtoc [except this was in 160 feet of water, rather than 5000 feet].

There are roughly 4000 active wells in the Gulf of Mexico. I don't know how many drill tens of thousands of feet down, but each one of these is a potential disaster.

Ixtoc took 10 months to cap.

Why are we surprised this happened?

      •  Most of the active wells (0+ / 0-)

Have had their highest risk points passed, I think.  We need to plan for the highest probability disasters. The period of transition from the drilling rig to the production rig should have been really high up on the list.
