  •  A number to think about (8+ / 0-)

BP's own estimates put the potential in the Macondo Prospect at 50 million barrels.

    At 42 gallons a barrel, that's a little over 2 billions gallons.

Not saying it would all just leak out at once. But if you divide 50 million barrels by 12,000 a day (middle-of-the-road number), you get over 11 YEARS of leakage.

Let's hope they are wildly successful.

If efforts fail to cap the leaking Deepwater Horizon wellhead in the Gulf of Mexico (map), oil could gush for years—poisoning coastal habitats for decades, experts say.

If the oil can’t be stopped, the underground reservoir may continue bleeding until it’s dry, Simmons suggested. The most recent estimates are that the leaking wellhead has been spewing 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons, or 795,000 liters) of oil a day. And the oil is still flowing robustly, which suggests that the reserve "would take years to deplete," said David Rensink, incoming president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. "You’re talking about a reservoir that could have tens of millions of barrels in it."

It's not fair to say from that that BP says it is a 50 million barrel reservoir! Odds are it is MUCH larger than that!

Good grief. That was just a Bloomberg piece about damage to one of the junior partners in the well, with an offhand quote from some low-level BP guy who is obviously incented to lowball everything, as they've been doing all along.

Keep your bullshit detector up! Don't believe this kind of crap!
