  •  Portland is building dedicated bike streets (6+ / 0-)

These streets are closed to through traffic and are resiential access only for cars and have all stop signs facing the cross streets so bikes can sail to work without fighting cars and trucks. We are calling them Bike Boulavards  and I believe there will be a dedicated one every 10 blocks.  Portland rocks, I am proud of my city.  We are also going to bring back electric street cars and our buses are either biodiesel or electric hybrid.  I use my biodiesel Benz about 700 miles per year.  There is really no need for daily use of a car here.

    •  See, that's what I'm talking about. (5+ / 0-)

I've always thought we could take some streets here and convert them to bike boulevards. With the population density that's expected in Seattle over the next decade we may not have a choice.

Even taking just one side of the street, converting it to a bike boulevard, and making the other side one way for cars (separated by a barrier) would work. It wouldn't take much to make cities truly bike friendly.

But kudos to Portland. You folks down there are leading the way. Keep on doing it!

      •  Even with a sympathetic govt it has not been easy (5+ / 0-)

We have been having public hearings over these changes and you would be shocked at the resistance from some people.  We(bike advocates) show up in mass to drown out the naysayers and most of them go away if not convinced as least not as against it.  We shake their hand and calm them down.  It is just so radical to think that a bike has just as much right to the road as car for some folk.  We are easing America into a new paradigm I hope.

        •  In SF there is one crank who files (3+ / 0-)

suit about every bike lane decision, and he held off the green lanes four a couple years. I can't remember his blog, but I used to frequent it just to call him a dick. (Cuz I'm like that.)  It sucks that city gov't and the vast majority of the populace supports becoming more and more bike friendly and it can get hung up over petty nonsense.
