mortality is lower I believe after the surgery so it is a question of recognizing this risk and and really probing why - without some idea it's likely that any "fixes" will just make things worse.

My mother was a smoker for almost all of her adult life (one two-year gap between a nearly fatal pneumonia and a broken wrist). She said one of her reasons was she was afraid of gaining even more weight if she quit. My  (non-smoker) father's response when I tried to talk about my mother's health and how she would be healthier without smoking was just to say that smokers had lower suicide rates.

    •  Smokers have lower suicide rates - lovely. (1+ / 0-)

My great grandmother smoked until she was in her 90's. They made her stop smoking when she went into a long term care facility. She died a few weeks before her 100th birthday. Her best friend, and my other great grandmother, died of lung cancer from second hand smoke.

I wonder if the suicide rate for post operative weight loss surgery is due to brain chemistry. How much do we know about the changes in brain chemistry when we change the absorption ability of the human body and it's necessary nutrients. We know that depression is much more common in folks who have weight loss surgery.  I wonder if anyone is seriously looking into this?

I've got an unfinished short story about Schrodinger's Dog; it was mostly moaning about all the attention the cat was getting~Terry Pratchett
