There really wasn't the need for the theatrics here, imho.

    •  i think the fight started because (0+ / 0-)

the people on the boat thought they were going to have this big public spectacle and then the israeli soldiers showed up at night and that went out the window

so, then it was a few of the people on one boat who decided that the only way to make a scene was to get into it with the soldiers when they boarded

      and they were right

      •  or, they were just furious (0+ / 0-)

that the soldiers were going to stop them from getting thru the blockade and they decided to get into a fight with the soldiers

to be honest... the people on the boat knew who the soldiers were... they knew why they were there... to stop them from breaking the blockade... and they knew that they could never hope to actualy win in a fight with the soldiers... what did they think was going to happen?  they would kick some off the boat and then what?  there were more soldiers right there.  were they going to escape into the night?  of course not.  they started fighting to either start a scene or just out of pure rage at their plan to break thru the blockade being foiled by the soldiers.

        •  Read some of the accts - it appears they had been (0+ / 0-)

fired upon before being boarded. That probably affected things a little.

What I find amazing is the shock - shock, I tell you - that doing the Rambo move elicited the response that it did.

Had it been 1 guy and a clipboard I doubt it would have gone down like this.

i think it was a grave mistake for israel to try to do this the way they did

i think they are responsible for the deaths

i think the people on the boats who started fighting with the soldiers are equaly responsible

what i don't think should be missed here is the fact that the people on the boats were trying to get into a fight with israel

i feel really aweful that it ended in deaths

i feel sick inside over it

but i can't ignore facts because i'm angry and sick over the deaths

and from what i can see the facts of this situation point to a deliberate attempt by the boats to end the blockade to gaza... and that is about allowing weapons into gaza

            •  I think you're confusing "fight" with (0+ / 0-)

a civilian action. These folks weren't armed, they weren't terrorists.

The response was disproportionate and ill-advised, and the only reason for pulling a Rambo on peace activists is to try to either discredit them or make an example.

Either way, bad move by the Israelis. Really bad move that ended up in tragedy.

      •  In other words (0+ / 0-)

you have no answer to the question of why Israel didn't search the ship on the sea instead of forcing them to land at an Israeli port.

I refuse to represent my political beliefs using numbers. It isn't accurate, nor is it helpful. But I'm around a -10 on both scales.
