  •  They think its the weight of the riser. (5+ / 0-)

Meanwhile they are forgetting that the pipe is seeing flow that comes through with a thrust of 4,850,000 pounds.

    14,000 PSI through a 21" pipe.

Three of the Saturn V F-1 rocket engines' thrust.

They ignored thrust and failed to protect the diamond serrated cutting cable.

Instead, doing multiple cuts at 10-degree or 15-degree steps would have avoided the main thrust flow. Sure, the cut would have taken an extra 12 hours max. But it would have worked first time.

Unfortunately, the Chernobyl-retread "managers" at BP adopted an aggressive timeline.

These are the same guys who tried to do a Top Kill by trying to plug this 14,000 PSI flow using a 10,000 PSI pump from the surface -- going in through a "tee" connection.

    Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

"The Truth About Chernobyl" from Grigori Medvedev for a look at how bad it can get with incompetent, politically connected mismanagement. At least the Russians jailed their miscreants. Hard time.
