"The Obama administration late Wednesday moved swiftly to plug a hole in its much touted six-month ban on new deepwater drilling when the Interior Department ordered oil companies to overhaul and resubmit dozens of exploration plans that had already been approved but were virtually identical to BP's and that called major spills and environmental damage "unlikely."

The action came after McClatchy informed the White House and Interior officials that it had reviewed 31 deepwater exploration and development plans approved for the Gulf under the Obama administration and found that all of them downplayed the threat of spills to marine life and fisheries.

The language scarcely varied from company to company, suggesting that the plans were pumped out like boilerplate. Of the 31 plans McClatchy reviewed, 14 were approved since the April 20 explosion on BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig..."

    •  wtf is goingon here. please correct me if I am (8+ / 0-)

wrong but I am under the impression that there is NO drilling of ANY KIND going on in the GULF at all. How are these approvals going through? Who is running the MMS? Obama or Cheney?

30 deep sea rigs.  tens of thousands of rigs are still in operation in the Gulf.

will be approved.  I'm guessing that these that McClatchy reviewed were ones that were approved prior to Obama's suspension statement last week.  There are 3,000 some already drilling for oil in the Gulf as we speak and therefore probably a hundred approved under Obama's admin sometime prior to last week.

As much as we hate it, everyone, including all of us who use plastic every day of our life every hour of every day, and including all those who work in the industry down there, need to figure out how to get off oil

      •  Ok let's get this clear (7+ / 0-)

He never said that.  They just want you to ASSUME he did.

But it's not what he said.  I will bold the most relevant part.

Additionally, after reading the report's recommendations with Secretary Salazar and other members of my administration, we're going to be ordering the following actions: First, we will suspend the planned exploration of two locations off the coast of Alaska. Second, we will cancel the pending lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico and the proposed lease sale off the coast of Virginia. Third, we will continue the existing moratorium and suspend the issuance of new permits to drill new deepwater wells for six months. And four, we will suspend action on 33 deepwater exploratory wells currently being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Deepwater."  And at the very moment he was explaining that ban expansion of "DEEPEWATER" leases, the MMS was finalizing new leases in shallow water.

We're suckers if we think Oil Co. isn't in complete control of everything that's happening, not just in the golf - but probably every where in government, at all times, when they choose.

since resources are scarce due to the current problem, allowing someone else to drill only intensifies the scarcity should only a minor mishap occur.  And we know about the hurricane season which should also be considered with this. Ugh!
