    paper by Benoit Mandelbrot, the guy who discovered the "Mandelbrot set" and was one of the founders of the science of fractals.  The paper is entitled "How Long is the Coast of England?"

    The point is that, contrary to normal understanding, there is no correct answer--it depends entirely on the scale of measurement.  If you measure in inches, with every twist and turn, you'll get a number vastly higher than if you measure in tens of miles.
