They stream it to akamai and akamai's servers around the country (and world) distributed it from there.

So, BP isn't getting hit except for web page loads and non live video content.

    •  The concept of Akamai (7+ / 0-)

Akamai is a major commercial Content Delivery Network.  They mirror stuff for many large web sites.

Here is the basic concept, for video.   The actual implementation may be different.   If you need to distribute a lot of video or other content, you can contract with them to distribute it.  If you did yourself, you would pay through the nose for a gigantic pipe to distribute a million copies simultaneously and large bandwidth charges for putting that much traffic on the backbone.

A reflector takes one copy of a video stream and serves out multiple copies to clients.

Suppose you are streaming your video from New Orleans.  You stream one copy to an Akamai reflector in Baton Rouge, perhaps.    If you have 10 viewers, they may route them all to that reflector.    When you have 100 viewers, they may fire up 5 reflectors in different regions of the country.  10,000 viewers, and they have a reflector in each state.  1 million viewers, and they might have a reflector in every major city.   Very little traffic goes over your own pipe and very little goes over the backbone because most of the video is streaming from a reflector near you.

That is the general idea.  Of course it is likely to be based on network topology, not political boundaries.
