  •  well we also (0+ / 0-)

We consume more than 20 percent of the world’s oil, but have less than 2 percent of the world’s oil reserves.

we also have a little less than five percent of the world's population (but still use a whopping one-fifth of the world's entire oil supply). We also have the highest per capita oil usage of any industrialized country in the world except Canada (it gets awfully cold in Canada in the winter). Our per capital oil usage is roughly twice as much as Japan, Germany or France (none of which are impoverished third world countries).

Which indicates pretty clearly that we as a nation are greedy gluttonous pigs, shlepping up far more than our fair share of the world's oil resources and flipping the bird at the rest of the world.

I very much doubt that the rest of the world will be willing to voluntarily allow us to keep doing that forever . . . . . . .

That oil isn't consumed by every person in America, and far from evenly by those who do consume it.

That oil is consumed across America's production of stuff. America produces over 20% of the stuff in the world, putting our oil consumption per amount of stuff at about average efficiency. The rest of the world consumes that stuff. So they're consuming that oil, but it gets accounted as American consumption.

The rest of the world doesn't "voluntarily" do that. They compete with us for energy resources or markets, depending on whether they buy, sell or both.

Our energy consumption shows that we're merely average greedy gluttonous pigs. Which is an excellent reason for us to improve our efficiency (which is my line of work, BTW), since improving our very large share's performance will raise the global average. We are obligated to be leaders in improvement precisely because we are where so much of the world's energy is consumed.
