  •  Women and war (4.00)
Amnesty Intl has a section on women and war.

Lots of info in their fact sheets.

    •  thanks for those links (none)
      very helpful.
      •  one of the reasons (4.00)
I support Amnesty International. They've pretty much got on board fairly early. If I'm remembering right, they got behind the push to make rape a war crime.

Not that it's going help anyone at dKos, but Cynthia Enloe is going to be here in a couple of weeks. Her books Bananas, Beaches and Bases is terrific at making connections between militarization and gender roles. And is very readable to boot--none of that dense academic jargon BS. The other side of rape and war, which Enloe talks about, is prostitution and war. I grew up next to military bases and the sex laborers know where their market it.

    •  It's heartbreaking .... (none)
and beyond the pale what happens to women in war and in so many other devastating circumstances.  I feel impotent, filled with rage and can't seem to stop crying.  Thanks for posting this and also for the links of what we can do.  Even if it's just phone calls, emails or faxes it is something.  Damn, why is it so hard to know right from wrong?  Not that torture is ever right but how can they do this to women?  Who are these people?

      •  the sad and ironic thing (none)
is that the propaganda machine made this big hoo-hah about how anti-female Islam is, and how wonderful America is because women aren't forced to wear those demeaning burqas, etc. etc.

And then our minions do stuff like this.

We can't stop here! This is bat country!
