if there were alternatives to oil which environmentalists supported.

Hydraulic hybrid trucks.  More public transit, greater density in urban/suburban areas to cut gas consumption.  More fuel-efficient and smaller vehicles.

Energy efficiency in buildings to use less electricity for buildings, leave more for transport, also use less heating oil.  Buy local and seasonal so that there are less transportation costs.

And then there are alternatives like wind, solar, geothermal and ultimately fusion.

What we need most is money for research, subsidies to get new technologies started, and an end to subsidies and perks for oil and coal.

I keep being told by environmentalists about the rare minerals that have to be mined for those, and how toxic the batteries are.

No wind.  We can't put wind farms on pristine land like Steens Mountain in SE Oregon, I keep being told, and will require batteries of some kind to provide baseload energy.

Solar has more of those minerals, and batteries too.

        Geothermal is like mining.

No hydrogen because its inefficient, take more energy to separate than it produces.

        No biofuels for similar reasons.

We have to blow up the dams because they're depressing fish populations, even if they do provide a huge amount of baseload energy without fossil fuels.

This is what I hear.  I think climate change is too important to worry about a lot of that stuff, though, and many of those problems we can solve.  But we can't live without disturbing the environment in some way.

to the wrong people, James. There are people that live in the real world who still support biofuels, solar and wind energy, alternatives to the gas engine, more efficient buildings, fish ladders, etc.
The people you're talking to sound like Luddites.
