"the days of an erudite elite are way past."

If you ever get the chance, get the audio book version of Gore Vidal's  Inventing a Nation: Washington, Adams, Jefferson (I'm pretty sure that's the title, but it might be another by Vidal) and listen to Vidal describe a conversation with his cousin's husband, John Kennedy, about the American elite today (well, 1960s) compared to the Founders. Vidal perfectly mimics JFk's voice, saying "They're so second rate."

A conservative is a scab for the oligarchy.

    •  Thanks, figures that I would finally say (0+ / 0-)

something quotable and it is an obvious observation on the decline of intellectual abilities and interests of the American elite. I'll try and get it, but my hearing is lousy and getting worse by the day, and I rely on reading. I am trying to imagine it, but keep winding up with Truman Capote's voice mimicking JFK so it just sounds strange. :)

No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable (Adam Smith, 1776, I, p. 96).
