  •  I knew a gay republican I used to argue with (6+ / 0-)

all the time in 2004 because he was a big Bush supporter.  He was married to a much older man who was a doctor, and he was a PhD student.  Both very educated.

I asked him why he was so gung ho on Bush and he said, "They [Muslims, he meant] all hate us.  Liberals don't understand how much they hate us." So I guess it was a 9/11 "war-on-terror" type thing.  Still, it was hard to understand how he could band politically with people who didn't recognize his marriage or his life as valuable...

I often wonder if he is still of the same opinion.

I think it could have been a money thing too, as he and his companion were very wealthy.

He was an intelligent person, so it was hard to figure out...

    •  Sometimes being intelligent and being smart (4+ / 0-)

      aren't the same thing.

    •  I'm having a similar argument (well, me and (4+ / 0-)

most of the rest of the board membership) on another message board with a similar person, a gay otherwise-liberal man who is going OVER. THE. TOP. with indignation over the mosque near Ground Zero. And he's Canadian! His contribution to the thread has been a string of the most xenophobic, generalizing, eliminationist rhetoric against Muslims I've ever seen. It's disgusting.

The one saving grace of American politics is that the Libertarian Party invariably makes the Democratic Party look like a highly organized hive mind.
