  •  It's complex and yet simple at the same time (8+ / 0-)

As we grow up, we all receive the same societal lessons on norms and morals as everyone else, even if we ultimately turn out to be one of the minorities that is still being discriminated against.

Most gay men (can't really speak for lesbians or the other sexual minorities) wind up having to overcome a significant amount of internalized homophobia. It's often the biggest thing that holds us back from being able to "come out" to ourselves and others and begin to have any kind of healthy relationship with others within our own Community. We get taught a lot of sex shame while growing up, and it gets taught during some very influential formative periods in our early lives, such that those lessons can be extremely hard to overcome. There's a huge "ick factor" (as I call it) over sexual acts to begin with, and gay sex is taught by society to be even far more "icky". So, when a gay male starts to realize that he's attracted to other men, there's one heckuva hill to have to climb to get past that "ick factor". Straight males never have to overcome any of that, so it not only remains, but continues to get reinforced by the whole machismo male code.

Many of us do realize, after having to deal with overcoming the internalized prejudice against the group we wind-up identifying with, that ALL such prejudices are bad and we try to overcome them, too, but the lessons we learned early-on to form those prejudices in the first place are still there. And many of us DON'T ever wind-up seeing the correlation between the different prejudices and just maintain the other biases that we were taught. I tend to think that we may have a lower percentage of biased and prejudiced people within the LGBT community than society at large, but probably not by an awful lot. Just because you've had to un-learn one prejudice doesn't mean you automatically un-learn them all.

Never has so much been taken from so many by so few for so long...
