    •  but seriously, i meant regardless of the law (0+ / 0-)

the obama admin is doing all sorts of shit against the law anyway, why not seize BP's assets and ask questions later?

      •  Ah, the ends justifies the means argument. (2+ / 0-)

        •  the political capital gained by doing so would (0+ / 0-)

          help the administration.

ideally, they would follow the law and international conventions and treaties and ethics in all instances

          but they don't.

instead, we torture, imprison indefinitely, allow corporations to shit all over our planet and kill people and we expect our politicians to tell us all the time that, "noo, don't listen to the critics, you're the greatest country ever!"

check out Bacevich's introduction to Niebuhr's "irony of american history".  he's got a lot to say.  despite being a supposed fan of niebuhr, obama sure as hell doesn't listen to anything niebuhr wrote.

We own GM, now maybe BP. Looks like socialism to me :). I agree that BP must be held accountable, but a weakened BP won't be able to pay as much as a healthy BP.  Not sure how that works.  Maybe all dividends go to escrow account.  Eventually, BP stock will go down significantly because of lack of dividend, especially if Shell and Exxon pay dividends to stock holders.  In some way, all oil companies should pay, BP was unlucky to get caught (or stupid enough to lose), but it could happen to any of them.  I think a stiff profit tax on oil companies, 50% might help build the escrow account for the Gulf.

I also agree we need new energy, but if you read about imported lithium and imported wind turbines (from China), we're losing that battle already.  We need a Manhattan Project or Moon race type effort to make US change ASAP.  Will it happen, no, unless Israel attacks Iran and Iran sinks 2 or 3 oil tankers in the straits, cutting off oil.  We'll use cars for breach erosion abatement.
