According to a guest on CSPAN, Exxon showed great willingness to compensate local businesses following the Exxon Valdez disaster...until the media attention went away.  Then, they began fighting tooth and nail to avoid paying anything.  After about 20 years of legal wrangling, claimants won in court an award of about $2.5 billion.  Exxon appealed it all the way to the US Supreme Court, which reduced the award to $500 million, a slap in the face many claimants felt.  Subsequently, some advised others not to bother suing; just to "get on with your lives."
