  •  what are the predictions (0+ / 0-)

for this winter in the Northeast and Midwest?

Will overall heating patterns warm or cool these regions?

And what do you think about disruption the oilpocalypse might do to the gulf stream?

    Gaia is heartbroken.

The Gulf Stream is affected by winds and forces over a much larger area than the oil affected area.

Jeff Masters did an interesting post on the possible effects of oil on hurricanes.

look for my DK Greenroots diary series Thursday evening. "It's the planet, stupid."

      starting next week.
Other than that, I think you can chuck your Farmer's Almanac. I used to have a "feel" for the upcoming winter each year (and I was more often right than wrong, fwiw) but that sense abruptly vanished in 1998. I haven't had a clue since.
Seriously, the patterns of the seasons are severely out of whack in New England. I work outdoors all year, and nothing is predictable anymore. The animals and plants seem unsure of what to do as well. This year the black flies are hardly noticeable. My guess is the ten days of temps in the 60s and 70s back in Feb-March hatched the eggs, and the May snowstorms killed off more.
The spreading oil in the Gulf will have an effect on our winter weather, imo because the winter pattern of the jet stream often brings Gulf moisture to NE in winter storms. I don't know if the oil slick will prevent evaporation, increase surface temps and thus increase the amount of moisture, or just lace everything with hydrocarbons, but I cannot believe there will be no effect from a toxic pool that huge sitting on a major contributor to our climate.
