  •  No one is saying Hamas is great (0+ / 0-)

They're a terrorist organization, for God's sakes. That's not the issue. What is the issue is that a supposedly democratic, human-rights-respecting country, Israel, violates human rights in Gaza and the West Bank. We have to hold Israel and all democratic nations to a higher standard. No one expects a terrorist organization to respect human rights. Also, no one should hold a democracy to the same standards of a terrorist organization. No one should excuse unacceptable actions of a democracy just because some terrorist organization might be worse. It wasn't okay when the US tortured people and it's not okay when Israel blockades Gaza.

Hamas is the elected "government" of Gaza. They won the majority of seats in the Parliamentary elections back in 2006. That, of course, is what the hugga-mugga is all about.

I don't see how you can apply different rules in terms of judging the ethics of either side.

Frankly, there's so much to not like on both sides that many are beyond caring -- yes, beyond caring whether or not the Palestinian people get a homeland and beyond caring whether Israel continues as a nation.

Two spoiled children hitting each other with sticks. And each declaring they'll stop when the other side lets them get in the last whack.

...sort of won by default, I'd say. Their opposition was Fatah, and they were corrupt as hell and couldn't deliver for Gazans. Hamas could, and they won.

and that means they ARE the government. So, let's not hold them to a different standard than the Israeli government.

Doesn't matter HOW they won. They won. They should be accountable in the same way and with equal measure as any other duly elected government.

from Gaza, it is Israel, the diarist is lying. between the two, Hamas is the more moderate, the Israeli regime is more extreme.

international law better then Israel does when they where elected to their Bantustans like government.

I will vote, but always with a caution that voting is not crucial, and organizing is the important thing.
