Hi Pam. By chance I live in upstate NY also. And lived in NYC during 9/11.

As sorrowful as 9/11 was, and as tragic as the catastrophe in the Gulf is, I took hope then, and I take hope now, from the indomitable and generous spirit of the people in NYC, and from people in the Gulf.

Trying to fathom what had taken place in NYC, it became readily apparent that my close friends in Manhattan, people in my apartment building , and people on the streets were all in this situation together. No one that I knew wanted to flee the city; we all wanted to provide love and comfort to each other. During this period, we more than ever realized the commonality of the human condition, and we all reached into our hearts and found our higher angels - we realized what the human spirit can achieve when it has to, or when it wants to, and we all took solace in that realization.

It's more than ever apparent to me that the people in the Gulf are also realizing the commonality of the frightening condition that they all find themselves in; and I hope that they are all reaching out to family, to friends, to strangers - to each other - for comfort, for hope, and for support.

I think, and hope, that they will know that they have each other, they have the American people, and they have the people of the world rooting for them, praying for them, and supporting them in whatever way that they can.

I'm hoping that they too, and you Pam, can take solace in the realization that surprisingly, very often in the midst of a situation that seems overwhelming, that makes us momentarily seem helpless, human beings can find the determination and will to overcome adversity, and in the process, reach into our hearts and find all of our higher angels - and, surprisingly, find what a wondrous thing the human spirit can be when it has to, when it wants to.
