    Yes, it would take a little while to scale the system up to support many more people, but not THAT long -- the system already exists and doesn't have to be built from scratch.

      Even sorting out the taxes and implementing them in a pay as you go system would have taken years.

      In fact, it took years for the current medicare to develop. In the beginning, doctors and health care providers submitted any bill they wanted and the government paid it.  I mean, we could do that right away.  It's just a really bad idea.

        bill for what ever they thought they should get. Medicare would only cover what it would allow. The elder would have to come up with the rest. Sometimes the doctor wouldn't give the patient a claim form until the balance was paid off. Often that meant it was too late to file with Medicare for reimbursement.

        My mother was forced to sell some of her few shares of stock to pay a doctors' fees. (which were a rip off.)
