  •  When you hang around lawyers alot (6+ / 0-)

You start to hedge everything you say.

He's probably thinking it might "only" constitute "cruel, inhumane, and degrading" treatment, which is also illegal, btw.

Yeah, I'm sure it's the lawyers, but it enrages me because it gives those who don't get it the excuse to say "It's not torture", "We don't torture", and "He stopped the torture." Sorry, Andy's wonderful, just hit a button.

I know, of all people, you know this, but for those reading, here is the UN definition of torture from the UN Convention Against Torture:
      Part I
      Article 1
For the purposes of this Convention, torture means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions.

Aside from threatening or actually kidnapping someone's child or spouse, there can be nothing more severe than the mental anguish you inflict on someone by telling them that no one knows where they are.

Sorry, this was one of the things they did to Dan, and because of his being covert it was true.

             Standing with you, as always,
                for justice and accountability,
                For Dan,

Torture is ALWAYS wrong, no matter who is doing it to whom.
