It's the percentage of our taxes that goes to support the wars in Iraq and Afghansitan, the huge military elsewhere in the ME, South and Central Asia and some of the cost of the Navy.  In turn, these behemoths use huge quantities of oil which we have to go out and find, and have a military to protect.

Don't kid yourself about gas taxes.  The Europeans pay gax taxes directly and drive less in smaller cars.  We pay them indirectly so we drive more in huge cars and trucks because we don't connect the two.

    •  Is there oil in Afghanistan? (0+ / 0-)

Seriously, this country fights wars because "military superpower" has become our identity. We've fought wars over bananas, over "strategic locations," over socialism, over nothing. The only reason we fight over oil is because fighting is what we do--it would be a lot cheaper just to buy it from our "enemies."
