Mankind, which in Homer’s time was an object of contemplation for the Olympian gods, now is one for itself. Its self-alienation has reached such a degree that it can experience its own destruction as an aesthetic pleasure of the first order.

We've witnessed our own self-destruction from an aesthetic (and anesthetic) distance so many times in this past century that now, when the destruction threatens to be global rather than national, regional, imperial or geopolitical, we have difficulty feeling its reality, when in fact it is the only reality.

Who are those hooded hordes swarming
Over endless plains, stumbling in cracked earth
Ringed by the flat horizon only
What is the city over the mountains
Cracks and reforms and bursts in the violet air
    Falling towers
    Jerusalem Athens Alexandria
    Vienna London
    Unreal

    Eliot's Waste Land, of course.
