Deep sea rig gives McCain oil platform

WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain flew to an oil rig deep in the Gulf of Mexico to illustrate the case for more drilling Tuesday – setting a new standard for dramatic backdrop as the candidates maneuver for an edge with voters feeling the pinch at the pump.

It was natural for skyrocketing fuel costs to overtake worries about Iraq, inflation and health care, but this campaign has seen many issues come and go.

Deep sea rig gives McCain oil platform

"Gas prices are through the roof," Mr. McCain said aboard the Chevron Genesis, a deep sea platform 130 miles off Louisiana that pumps out 10,000 barrels of oil daily. "Senator [Barack] Obama opposes new drilling. He said it won't solve our problem and that it's quote 'not real.' He's wrong, and the American people know it."

Democrats countered by painting the Republican as a lackey of Big Oil, mounting an "ExxonMcCain '08" faux campaign replete with buttons and bumper stickers. Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, speaking for the Obama campaign, said Mr. McCain wants to turn the country into Swiss cheese with wells and derided his "Jed Clampett energy policy,"
