"...to prove their competence." That's right - the onus is on them.

We are smart enough, brave enough, and civilized enough to wrench a mother's child out of her arms for less incompetence.

    •  Well, remember... (0+ / 0-)

... a lot of time, said wrenching of child is done due to the incompetence of skin color and/or being poor...

      •  OT, but not in my experience (0+ / 0-)

In Cal, NY, and NJ, at least, only for pretty extreme, well documented neglect and abuse and the mothers usually get the kids back. There are mistakes, but not "a lot of time" or even a much at all. The array of lawyers, advocates, social workers, and judges are naturally prejudiced against separation, by far. I have seen witnessed up close money influence where the kids end up after separation, but not if the bio family is reunified.

In general, I believe CPS type services are a good thing, but I have seen some bad decisions made.

I probably should not have made a generalization, though - your comment just brought up some old memories of things that I had observed a number of years ago.

...but in my experience most people "in the system" are vigilant about looking for abuses (frequently instigated by social worker burn-out) as part of their job and fixing them. Every single case sucks, every case is painful, each filled with terrible terrible consequences for parent and child... Take care...
