  •  Ok...that sounds logical (0+ / 0-)

But isn't football still the predominant sport in France, both in prestige and popularity?

    •  As a spectator sport, yes (1+ / 0-)

but not everybody who is nuts about soccer actually plays soccer.

American football is a great spectator sport, and draws its players from all sorts of racial and economic demographics.  What's the difference in France.  Are white French conceding football to immigrants from Africa?

        •  I doubt they are "conceding" (6+ / 0-)

I'm not familiar enough with the French soccer scene to know what's going on. All I know is that the French team has more black players than ever before.

When I lived in Germany, I noticed (and that was the case for the neighboring countries, too) that German-born kids played soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, water polo, you name it. Migrant kids (boys, to be exact) played soccer, period. Some migrant communities even started their own clubs. A lot of it has to do with money and social class. While people of all economic strata WATCH soccer, playing soccer, as well as belonging to a hardcore fan club, is usually associated with the working class.

Now that more people with migrant background have French, German, or Swiss passports than ever before, one tends to see more "colorful" teams. Countries with a colonial history such as The Netherlands, Belgium and France have always had non-white team members, only fewer than they do now.

I suppose once European people of color have more money, we will see more of them in golf or equestrian events.
