  •  cotterperson: I can explain that a little bit (8+ / 0-)

    The RGV needs the rain.

I know that sounds awful, but... it's true.

The Rio Grande Valley has desperate poverty, yes; but it also has some things no other part of the country sustains. There's the citrus industry (although developers are doing their dead level best to kill that in favor of cookie-cutter over-priced under-built ticky-tack houses), the Valley's farms (it's an ancient alluvial plain; given water, it's some of the most magnificiently productive soil in the USA), and the King Ranch (among others).

Texas is a desert, even along its coast. We always need the rain. Sometimes, we need it to take longer to fall so it soaks in rather than washing off, but we always need the rain.

Laguna Atascosa and Santa Ana need the rain; Bentsen-Rio Grande SP needs the rain; and with a little luck, God willing, the creeks WILL rise and we'll be rid of that never-damned-enough border fence!
